Reflection Essay
This semester in English 2010 I feel like I have really grown as a
writer. I learned how to deal with different writing situations, and how to write to my audience. Throughout this semester we had to write multiple genres report,
position/ proposal, profile, and a blog. With all of those different genres I had to adjust my writing to who my paper was going to be read by. My report was a much different tone than my blog. My blog was more of a personal level
compared to my factual report. I revised all of my papers at least five times each.
This was hard for me to get used to, normally I write one fix the grammar and punctuation then it’s done. But in this class I really had to tear my paper apart and start learning how to really revise a paper.
Another course goal I had to focus on was citing my sources. I had a pretty amazing English 2010 instructor who taught me how to cite well. This semester I had one main issue with citing my work. I would use a person’s name like Gary Beck and would say it multiple times in a paragraph then still cite it at the end.
Ms. Hull taught me that if I say who he is, what he does, and about him I
don’t have to use intext citation, I just have to make sure to cite at the end.
My peer review sheets really helped me a lot on understanding what I
should focus on, on revising my papers. The most helpful ones were the constructive criticism. They would say something like “I liked your discussions, but maybe go in more depth on this certain topic.” That was very helpful so I didn’t waste my time focusing on something that I maybe shouldn’t be. When I do peer reviews for others I have some weaknesses. I have a really hard time catching grammar mistakes or punctuation. So when I did peer reviews I focused on
the things that I was good at. I liked to catch citation errors and topics that can elaborate on, or make more sense of. Revising all of my work was a struggle for me to grasp what I needed to be focusing my writing on. My biggest problem was the topic obesity was a hard one to focus on. I chose it because health is something I am interested in. I had to focus on the controversies not just the topic; I wanted to get sidetracked. When I was going to start revising I had to go back to our English book and read through the difference of a report and a position paper. I wanted to
mix those two very different genres together. Another problem I had was I didn’t take the time to go back and reread my work to make sure it made sense.
Some of my sentences did not make any sense to readers.
On my report I had a problem with my headings and subheadings. Ms. Hull really helped me learn how to use them correctly. I think in my revised portfolio I finally got my headings and subheadings right. I feel like it is more organized now.
In my position paper I wanted to keep mixing in some reporting in with
it. I struggled just stating my position and telling my proposal to the problem. On my final I focused on making a clearer thesis statement and really tried to prove my statement before I moved on to my proposal.
Finally in my review on Susanne Eman I had to focus on her lifestyle and
not my opinion of her. This was hard because I have such a strong opinion about her so I tried to not let it show on this paper. I tried to save all the emotion for my blog about her.
Overall I have learned a lot out of this class. I believe my writing is stronger than it ever has been. If I had to take this class again however I think I would chose a different topic to talk about, it was a hard one for me. I think I really pushed myself on this topic though because it was harder than most to talk about. I believe at the end I really got my points a crossed nicely. From now on I will be able to write in any situation and clearly state what needs to be said, and to whom I need to. These
writing techniques will be very useful for the rest of my life and in my future
career.
